on hold...

Some of you may already know that I'm in the process of re-designing my portfolio site... what you may not know is that this little blog here is getting a hefty makeover too!! (yay!)

So, in lieu of said makeover, I'm putting this baby on hold for a few. Don't hate me - you'll (hopefully) be pleasantly surprised when we're done.

In the meantime, check out some of the archives - there's a lot of beautiful things buried in those older posts! Also, check the right side of this page for a long list of blogs I adore, and that you probably will too :)

Until then, all my love, I'll be missing you!

getting to the point...

I FINALLY took some pictures of our new Fort Point studio yesterday!

Jen and I moved in back in September and between both our schedules, the process of setting up is taking a while. So it's a work in progress - we still need a rug, curtains and desperately have to hang up all of Jen's gorgeous prints... But enjoy!

Welcome to our new studio! JHill Design on the right, Jessica Sutton Graphic Design on the left :)

a cozy little corner for reading, sipping tea, greeting clients...
I got the couch, desk, coffee table and chair (cropped out on the left) on Craigslist - all via Crocodile Tears!! I recovered the chair with Amy Butler fabric. The vintage desk lamp was my grandfather's.

all the ceiling lights, shelves, storage boxes and blanket are from IKEA...

This space heater was my grandfather's...
Amy Butler fabric on the windows (for now) and striped IKEA fabric hides shelves for storage..

Intern station on the left, my station on the right... desks are Melltorp dining tables from IKEA.
Both chairs were bought from Craigslist (white is West Elm, black is Knoll), the cart is a vintage folding medial cart (circa 1970), all found on Crocodile Tears!

grabbed this wireform when Parlor was closing for $10!

the lovely miss Jen Hill!

I found this old sewing table in the trash!! Just put our coffee machine on it today (not pictured)...

Our little mascot, mr. Oscar... :)

The lovely miss Keyse also featured us on her blog here!

get your press on...

A few weeks ago, I was interview by Galen Moore of MHT regarding some of my craigslist purchases via Crocodile Tears. Here's a bit of what went down (pics of the studio can be seen here):

Craigslist booms with Boston business discards
"On the other side of the Craigslist equation, graphic designer Jessica Sutton has furnished most of her Fort Point studio with mid-century modern furniture bought on Craigslist. It’s a habit she picked up last year, when she was starting out in a smaller office in the Back Bay. “I was just starting out and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money,” she said. Now, bargain hunting has become her M.O.

Craigslist doesn’t reveal the number of posts it sees daily, but the flood of offers could easily overwhelm any shopper. Sutton said she doesn’t have time to dig through the site itself — and she doesn’t have to. Boston blogger Keyse Angelo puts up her favorite picks on a Google-hosted blog she calls Crocodile Tears."

You can read the whole article here.

And if you've been living under a rock the past year, please for the love of god, check out Keyse's blog - it will knock your treasure-hunting socks off!!

whooga whooga...

This just in: the lovely folks over at Whooga have offered a special discount to all Daucus Carota readers!

ugg boots

Whoogas are unique because they use the finest Merino sheepskin for their inner lining, making them a longer-lasting, more comfy boot than their ugglier-named competitor...

I'm personally digging the tall grey ones :)

Check 'em out! The code, JESSICASUT will knock $30 off your order and is valid through 8/12/09... happy shopping!

a little lazy but busy...

While I'm not lazy enough to use a genius invention such as this all-in-one card stamp (which is actually pretty rad if you ask me), I have been a bit too lazy to blog and for that, my sincerest apologies...

In reality though, it's been less a situation of laziness so much a an all-out stress/cramming/craziness on my end. I finally graduated from my yoga teacher training this past weekend (!!) and along with that came test prep and a huge workshop prep that kept me away from this lovely little blog of mine. But alas, I'm finally a certified yoga teacher!

Along with the yoga-ness, there's been that other distraction - work work work. BUT I promise, I will try to get back on the ball asap.

much love

and i'm off...

As you read this, I'm on a plane, finally headed to Costa Rica for 2 weeks of sun-filled bliss!

I will attempt to post a few updates
(apparently the only wi-fi will be at a juice bar down the street from my hotel). Don't count on much from little old me but expect some absolute greatness from the fab girls lined up to guest blog while I'm gone! Please, make them feel at home and show them a lot of love :)

So, wish me luck in the surfing department... eeek! And here's to bringing back the warm weather!

xoxo,
Jess

my apologies...

Forgive me, readers, for I have sinned... it's been over a week since my last entry.

Last weekend, Dave and I moved to a new, slightly bigger, dog-friendly apartment. Therefor, the last week has been filled with packing, moving, unpacking, home depot, cleaning, painting,
more unpacking, west elm, target, more unpacking... it just doesn't seem to end! I hope to get back on track this week. Promise.

In the meantime, check out this great print by Daniel Eatock:

He made it "by repeatedly balancing a single A1 sheet of paper on the nibs of a set of Pantone pens" - so cool.

OK, off to Rhode Island for some of Dave's mom's amazing cooking :)

100 days...

YEAY! According to my countdown widget, I have 100 days, 15 hours and 54 minutes until I leave for Costa Rica...

Why am I going to Costa Rica you ask? Well, only because I've planned THE MOST amazing vacation, like, EVER.

First, I'll be staying at the Harmony Hotel in Nosara Beach, surfing and doing yoga (through Inward Bound) for a whole week by myself - THEN - the lovely miss Jen and the tall mr Dave are getting hitched a few miles up the coast and I'll be spending yet another week partying it up with them at the Hotel Playa Negra!

So only 100 days to go. The countdown is on. God, it can't come soon enough...

11/3/08

number seven...

Thanks, everyone for helping me make the Top 10 Boston Blogs on Facebook!
I'm currently sitting pretty at number 7!

If you give me a good rating and invite more friends, maybe we can make it to number 1 :)

all business...

I come to you today with exciting news...

After a lot of thought and consideration, I've decided to finally go full-time freelance!

catmadogma

As of September 1st, I will be ending my full-time position as the Senior Web Designer at Fresh and staying on as a part-time Web Consultant, hence opening up my week to focus on my main priority - my clients :)

Fresh has by-far been the most amazing job I ever could have asked for and the fact that they are so willing to support my decision is amazing. I've adopted such a wonderful family there and am so thrilled to be able to stay on and maintain their site while I pursue my own business. The lessons I've learned as a designer for Fresh have been priceless, a million thanks goes out to them.

So now it's time for the scary stuff to begin... I've been patiently building toward this day for four years now, slowly growing my client base and it's finally here - so completely surreal! The stars have been aligning quite perfectly and I couldn't be more excited to take this next step in my professional life.

So wish me luck! I'm sure you'll be hearing a LOT more from me now that I'll be sitting at home in front of my massive monitor all day :)

xoxo
